Lighting to Elevate Your home

At our studio we consider lighting to be the Jewelry of the home – though it can come with a price tag the correct application of lighting fixtures can transform your home from mediocre to extraordinary.

When selecting lighting you must consider function, ambiance, and focal emphasis. Function is the most obvious but sometimes the most overlooked application of lighting. In most cases, one central light fixture in a room is not enough to fully illuminate the space so this is where we begin layering in additional fixtures such as recessed cans in order to allow equal lighting throughout a room. Once the overhead lighting is addressed we begin to focus on the ambiance by incorporating decorative fixtures such as sconces, pendants, and lamps throughout the space. Though each of these have a functional aspect, they also add style to the space. Lastly we layer in lighting that promotes a focal emphasis in a space by highlighting a point of interest. Examples of this could be linear art lighting, light strips for a backlit mirror, or downlighting applied to shelving to emphasize accessories. Though this type of lighting is not required to lighten up a room, it does add a rich element to the space and draws attention to details that may not otherwise be noticed by a user.

Now, here are some fixtures our studio and clients are loving and some application ideas for you to incorporate into your next space.

Kitchen

In a kitchen setting its very important to mix in recessed can lighting in order to illuminate your work space but that does not mean you have to sacrifice the decorative aspect of a space. Oversized pendants over your kitchen island is a statement any visitor will take notice of. Mix in a metal in contrast to the background or add a textural detail here to draw attention to the center of the room, creating a center point and gathering spot. These oversized pendants were created custom in order to meet our clients size restrictions but here are a few options we are swooning over

Powder Bathroom

A powder bathroom is the perfect location to test the boundaries to your style. The space is small enough to keep hidden away, yet it can make a huge statement. This is a good spot to mix in the ambient lighting selections to add a little spice. Try introducing a new metal finish or texture in your next powder bathroom remodel – think outside of the box and watch it come together, you may surprise yourself. Here are some statement sconces we think you’d love.

FAMILY ROOM AND DINING ROOM

When dealing with an open flooring plan without a defined threshold between rooms – embracing repetition is an easy way to ground each space without worrying about the overkill of clashing fixtures. Add a matching oversized fixture over each space to define a center point and a change of use to the room. Sometimes repetition can be the simplest lighting solution to support a cohesive design. Bedrooms

In this Florida heat, we usually have to contend with a ceiling fan being incorporated into bedrooms, but this gives us the opportunity to focus more on additional ways to add lighting. After layering in a ceiling fan with a simple design and style, we look at spreading out recessed lighting to cover the space, then we incorporate accent lighting. In a bedroom we focus on having a fixture on each side of the bed for balance of the space but also to allow versatility when the room is being used by more than one person. Our go-to ceiling fans and a few of our favorite trending table lamps are shown below.
